SpringFestival,alsoknownasChineseNewYear,isundoubtedlythemostimportantandbelovedholidayinChina.AsayoungboygrowingupinasmalltowninsouthernChina,Ialwayslookedforwardtothisfestiveoccasionwithgreatexcitementandanticipation.Thefestiveatmosphere,thedeliciousfood,andthecheerfulcrowdsallcontributedtomakingitatrulymemorableexperience.AsthedayofSpringFestivaldrewnear,myparentswouldstartcleaninganddecoratingourmodesthome.Thefloorswerescrubbedclean,thewindowswerepolisheduntiltheysparkled,andbrightredlanternswerehungonthedoorwaystobringgoodluckandprosperity.Eventheairwasfilledwiththesweetfragranceoftheflowersthatbloomedduringthisseason.OnNewYear'sEve,ourextendedfamilywouldgathertogetherforabigfeast.Thetablewasladenwithallsortsofdeliciousdishes,fromsteamedfishtodumplings,fromroastporktostickyricecakes.Wewouldeatandchatandlaughuntillateintothenight.Afterdinner,mycousinsandIwouldplaygamesandlightfirecrackerstocelebratetheoccasion.
Thefollowingmorning,wewoulddonournewclothesandpayrespectstoourelders.Itwasatraditionforchildrentogreettheirparentsandgrandparentswithadeepbow,whilewishingthemgoodhealthandlongevity.Inreturn,theywouldgiveusredenvelopesfilledwithmoneyasasignoftheirloveandblessings.AsthedaysofSpringFestivalworeon,wewouldvisitrelativesandfriendstoexchangegreetingsandgifts.Wewouldalsoattendvariousculturalactivitiessuchasdragondances,liondances,andtemplefairs.Everywherewewent,therewasanairofjoyandexcitementaspeopleembracedthespiritofthefestival.Oneyear,however,thingstookanunexpectedturn.ItwastheYearoftheHorse,andmyfamilyhaddecidedtospendSpringFestivalinthecountryside,wheremygrandparentslived.Wearrivedontheeveofthefestival,lookingforwardtoatraditionalcelebrationwiththewholefamily.Butthatnight,aswewereenjoyingourfeast,mygrandfathersuddenlyfellill.Hewasastrongandhealthyman,andwewereallshockedbyhissuddenturnfortheworse.Despiteourfranticeffortstofindadoctor,hepassedawaylaterthatnight.
